Cuentista y poeta estadounidense. Los primeros idiomas que adquirió Paley fueron el ruso y el yiddish. Seguramente a esto se debe su enorme habilidad para reproducir en su narrativa diversos acentos y maneras de hablar. Tomó parte activa en la oposición a la Guerra de Vietnam en la década de 1960 y continuó su activismo político una vez terminada la guerra. Sus cuentos, exploraciones compasivas y a veces cómicas de la vida familiar y de barrio, así como de la de individuos que luchan contra la soledad, fueron recopilados en Batallas de amor (1959), Enormes cambios en el último minuto (1974) y Más tarde el mismo día (1985). Su poesía está incluida en Leaning Forward [Inclinada hacia adelante] (1985) y Begin Again [Vuelve a empezar] (1992).
